Adolescents & Children
|
Childhood and adolescence are very important developmental stages, each with their own stressors and issues. Fully appreciating these developmental stages is necessary to understand the behaviors and symptoms that fall beyond what our culture considers "acceptable." Talking with a therapist can help determine what is typical behavior and when a parent should be concerned.
North Shore Wellness Services has therapists who are specially trained to work with children and teenagers. Therapy is a way to help them when they have difficulty in their everyday lives, including issues with school, peers, self-esteem and relationships with parents and siblings. Often times, the entire family needs to be involved in the process to help a child experiencing disruptive behavior.

Parents, teachers and friends usually are the point-people for children and adolescents who might benefit from counseling. If you know of such a child or teenager, consider the following:
- Is there a lot of yelling in the child's house? Does their household constantly seem chaotic?
- Is the child drastically different from other children but you don't know why?
- Does the child seem unhappy most of the time?
- Does the child have a hard time controlling impulsive behavior or settling down?
- Is the child quick to get angry or does he or she have a "hot temper" that seems out of control?
- Does the child seem to rebel for the sake of rebelling?
- Does the child wake up too early or have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep?
If you feel that counseling might be right for a child or teenager, call for an intake appointment. You will be matched with a professional who specializes in children and adolescents. Together, you and the therapist will develop a treatment plan that is right for the entire family.
